Multiply the decimal value by 60 to get total minutes. Then divide those minutes into whole hours and remaining minutes. For example, 7.75 decimal hours equals 465 minutes, which is 7 hours 45 minutes.
8.5 × 60 = 510 minutes. That is 8 full hours plus 30 minutes, so 8.5 decimal hours = 8 hours 30 minutes.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add that value to the whole hours. For example, 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour, so 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 decimal hours.

Decimal hours are convenient when hours are multiplied by an hourly rate. For example, 7.50 hours at $20 per hour equals $150 before taxes, deductions or other payroll rules. Decimal time does not mean the same thing as clock minutes: 7.30 decimal hours is 7 hours 18 minutes, not 7 hours 30 minutes.
